Illinois Region Tours Largest Redevelopment Project in the U.S.

601W Cos. and Telos Group hosted 55 members of the WREAA Illinois region on a tour of the historic Chicago’s Old Main Post Office. Construction crews spent the past 12 months removing 23 million pounds of debris from the building –90% of it was recycled—in what is now the largest redevelopment project in the U.S.: 2.8M SF, spanning three city blocks and five acres. The 601W Cos. bought the old Main Post Office from the late Bill Davies and launched a $800M redevelopment program that has grown to over $1B. Prospective tenants will have 250K SF floor plates, the largest in Chicago. Recent notable lease signings include Walgreens. After the tour, members met across the street to quaff refreshments.  



Northern California Tees Up

Bay Area Real Estate Badgers battled the San Francisco fog and a PGA Championship-caliber course when they got together for the annual WREAA Northern California Golf Outing at TPC Harding Park.  Congrats to hole prize winners Bob Peltzman, Stew Cedarleaf, Zach Allera, Martin Kemeny, and James Geimer.  Dan Flattery took home the prize for low score with a blistering hot round of 85!  Many in attendance remarked how excited they are to carry forward the momentum from this outing to the Biennial Badger Golf Open at University Ridge this fall.

Southern California on the Links

The Southern California Badger Golf Outing was held July 24, 2018 at the beautiful Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita, California.  Badgers and friends competed for 18 holes then met for a networking reception and award presentation.  The winning foursome was 10 under par and included Michael Haeri, Eric Herro, Scot Eisendrath and Thomas Gilfillan.  The "Longest Drive" was awarded to Michael Haeri who drove the ball 375 yards. The "Closest to the Pin" prize went to Scot Eisendrath at 10 feet.  Many thanks to Southern California Market Representative Seth Levin (BBA 2006) for his work in organizing the outing.



Texas Region Tours Legacy West

The Texas Region WREAA members were fortunate to take an exclusive tour of Legacy West in Plano on June 6. A special thanks to Invesco for hosting the event. The Legacy West development includes 330,000 SF of office above retail, 330,000 SF of upscale restaurants, high end boutiques and outdoor/indoor entertainment venues. The 38 acre mixed-use urban district in the epicenter of Legacy also contains 621 urban residential lofts and a 300-room Renaissance Hotel and Conference Center. The tour wrapped up at the Food Hall which is a 3 story, 55,000 square foot European-style food hall with more than 20 restaurants and a brewery. The development is surrounded by several global corporations such as Toyota, JPMorgan Chase, Liberty Mutual Insurance, JC Penney, and Frito Lays and located in one of the fastest growing sub-markets in the country.


  Madison Mallards Baseball Enjoyed by Wisconsin Badgers

for the Mallards to win the 2nd game of a double header.

The second annual WREAA Mallard's baseball event was a rousing success.  Alumni and friends from Madison, Milwaukee and the surrounding areas, enjoyed an evening of Mallards baseball at the Duck Pond in Madison.  The Mallards General Manager lead the group on a pre-game tour of the stadium which was followed by good food, great conversation and a close game of baseball. In the end, the Mallards overtook the Lakeshore Chinooks of Grafton, Wisconsin, and won 2-1.  Many thanks to Western Wisconsin Market Representative Ashley Caldis (BBA 2009) for coordinating the event!  


  Annual Badger Golf Open held in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Sixty alumni and friends attended the Annual Badger Golf Open held on June 15, 2018, at Hawk's View Golf Club in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.  Players, who came from across the Midwest, including Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison, enjoyed a networking lunch, followed by 18 holes of golf and a cookout dinner.  The victorious foursome was Mitch Adams, Pete Marino, Kevin Brennan and Tim Lisy.  Special thanks to Hawks View Golf Club and to Chicago Market Representative, Steve Kundert for coordinating the event.

Denver Badgers in the Lower Highland Neighborhood

On April 11th, Corum Real Estate toured WREAA members through 100-unit in-fill development in the Lower Highlands neighborhood in Denver.  The project has some unique challenges given the topography of the site which allowed for some unique design elements to be incorporated into the project, mainly the 15’ ceilings of the ground floor units.  The group also toured the flexible amenities areas and two roof top decks.  After the event, Corum was gracious enough to sponsor a happy hour immediately across the street.  Thankfully the weather was warm and everyone was able to enjoy an adult beverage outside. 

Northern California Tours MacArthur Commons




Alumni and friends in the Northern California Region were treated to a tour of MacArthur Commons, a 396-unit TOD development under construction in Oakland California's Temescal neighborhood.  Charlie Tilleman (BBA 2011), Associate at Hines Interests, led the hardhat tour.  Hines and Northwestern Mutual teamed up to develop and finance the project.  Following the tour, the group enjoyed a happy hour at the nearby Arthur Mac's Tap and Snack. Thanks to Dan Flattery (BBA 2008), WREAA Northern California Regional Director for coordinating the event!

 Minnesota Badgers Visit the Moxy Hotel


James Graves, Chairman and CEO of Graves Hospitality, led Minnesota Badgers and friends on a tour of the Moxy Hotel, a six-story, 125 bedroom boutique hotel in the Minneapolis Uptown neighborhood.  James also provided the group with an overview of the project's development and investment strategy. The tour wrapped up with a networking reception in the hotel's Lobby Bar.  Thanks to Minnesota Market Representative,  Anders Pesavento, BBA 2005, for setting up the event!

New York City Badgers Learn Chelsea Market Details


The Capital Markets Roundtable and Dinner, held on Monday, May 7, 2018, at the City Winery in New York City, was extremely well attended and enjoyed by all. The large group heard details of the Chelsea Market transaction from Josh Wechter, Co-Chief Investment Officer for Jamestown.  Mr. Wechter also discussed the strategy for Chelsea Market going forward.  The attending Badgers and friends then enjoyed a networking dinner.  Thank you to Cody Langeness (BBA 2006) WREAA Vice-President Programs and Matthew Rawlsky, (BBA 2009), Market Representative for the Northeast - New York Region, for setting up this event.

Southern California Region Tours the Boardwalk

On February 21, AEW Capital Management and Trammel Crow Company welcomed WREAA members and guests to tour The Boardwalk, a new 550,000 sf speculative office development

in Irvine, CA.  


After lunch in the property's conference center, attendees walked through the nine-story buildings, crossing through one of the four enclosed bridges and three outdoor terraces spanning the two structures.  After seeing the on-site gym and yoga room (complimentary for tenants), the group debriefed in one of the many outdoor meeting areas contained within the private two-acre courtyard.


The property is held within AEW's $8.0B open ended Core Property Trust.  The buildings were designed by Gensler and built by Snyder Langston. Construction financing was provided by JPMorgan and Wells Fargo.  The property is currently 25% leased to a strong roster of tenants, and is in leases for an additional 20% of the remaining space.


WREAA Meets Dr. Mark Eppli in Milwaukee



The March 1st meet and greet with Dr. Mark Eppli, was enjoyed by the large group of alumni and friends who attended.  Dr. Eppli will join the James A. Graaskamp Center for Real Estate in August of 2018 as a faculty member.  He shared remarks about his new role and held an interactive discussion with those attending. The evening concluded with a networking reception. Thanks to Tom O'Meara (BBA 2006), WREAA Eastern Wisconsin Market Representative for coordinating the event!


Boston Welcomes the Real Estate Club!




Boston area alumni and friends gathered at Post 390,  on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 to welcome the Real Estate Club to the area. The Club visited Boston on their Spring Field Trip.  Students and staff enjoyed a reunion with retired Professor Stephen Malpezzi, along with networking with all in attendance.  Cheers to WREAA Boston Market Representative Jake Maliel  (MBA 2008) for coordinating this event!  Visit the WREAA Network Blog for further details about the trip.

Badgers Mix It Up In Arizona



Badgers and friends from the Phoenix area got together for a Happy Hour Mixer at The Beverly on Main in Old Town Scottsdale on November 8, 2017.  The group enjoyed the venue, great food and first-rate networking.  Thanks to Frank Demeter, Jr. (MS 1990), WREAA Arizona Market Representative, for setting up this event!



Badgers and friends from the New York City area were brought up to date on the New York City multifamily market with the help of Martin Nussbaum, Co-Founder of Slate Property Group.  Martin presented his insights at the Lunch and Learn event on November 15 at the Park Avenue Autumn.  Thank you to Matthew Rawlsky, (BBA 2009), Market Representative for the Northeast - New York Region, for setting up this event.




The Colorado WREAA Chapter hosted a lunch-n-learn on November 16, 2017. Kevin Kelley (MBA 1980) of United Properties talked about his two most recent notable developments in Colorado, the market and general outlook on the current real estate development environment.  All in all, it was a great turnout and the conversation evolved to more of a round table discussion with various members sharing their insights on everything ranging from debt markets, sales and even the plight of the Broncos…  We look forward to hosting another similar event in the Spring. 


Cubs Owner Tom Ricketts Discusses Wrigleyville



WREAA partnered with the Graaskamp Center for Real Estate to co-sponsor the latest installment of the Graaskamp on the Road series in Chicago on November 30th. During the event, Tom Ricketts, owner of the Chicago Cubs, received the Graaskamp Building Communities award for his work on revitalizing the Wrigleyville neighborhood since his acquisition of the storied baseball franchise in 2009.  Read all the details on the Wisconsin Network Blog .


Washington D.C. Holds Holiday Luncheon

The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of WREAA gathered for their annual holiday luncheon on Friday December 8th at Osteria Morini in the heart of the Riverfront District in Washington, DC. WREAA President Andrew Weir joined the group to give a quick update on the Wisconsin Real Estate program as well as overview of the current state of the capital markets, Andrew Felber of CBRE put together a great presentation on the current leasing landscape in Washington. Last but not least, Michael Zelin of Eastdil Secured led a discussion on the large number of new entrants to the debt markets.


Southern California Badgers in the Holiday Spirit



The Southern California Chapter of the WREAA were treated to a tour of Cutwater Distillery on December 12, 2017.  Following the tour, the group enjoyed a Holiday Party at the Tasting Room and Kitchen on the distillery property. Madison Mallards Baseball



Western Wisconsin WREAA members, friends and family assembled at the Madison Mallards Baseball game on August 9th.  The event was held in a suite in the new Great Dane Duck Blind, which was built using 37 shipping containers in the spring of 2017.  Not only did attendees enjoy the baseball game with upscale concessions, but were also treated to a real estate construction description of the new structure, which is the first shipping container project in Madison, and the first of its kind in baseball.  Those who arrived early received the first edition Maynard wobblehead!  Thanks to WREAA Regional Director, Matt Braun (BBA 1999) for coordinating the event.

Southern California Golf Outing



The Southern California Badger Golf Outing was held at Tijeras Creek Golf Club, in Rancho Santa Margarita, California on August 1, 2017.  Golfers enjoyed 18 holes of golf, lunch and a post golf networking reception in shadow of the beautiful Santa Ana Mountains.   Special thanks to Seth Levin (BBA 2006), WREAA Southern California Market Representative, for coordinating this year's outing.


Illinois Region Tours Fulton West

On August 24th, the Chicago chapter gathered at one of Sterling Bay's newest West Loop/Fulton Market Developments, Fulton West, for a property tour led by Badger alum Jared Larson, an Associate with Sterling Bay. The group was able to see a variety of spaces, both shell and complete tenant buildouts, as well as the beautiful view of Chicago from the expansive rooftop terrace. After the tour was completed, the group grabbed Sterling Bay goodie bags and headed to the Twisted Spoke rooftop for snacks, a few drinks, and networking. A special thanks to Jared Larson for helping to coordinate a fun tour and event!

 Eastern Wisconsin Discuss Milwaukee Bucks Arena District Development



A large group of WREAA members and guests gathered for a discussion on development in the Milwaukee Bucks Arena District and networking reception on September 14, 2017.  Blair Williams, Managing Director, Real Estate, spoke with attendees about current activity and development opportunities around the district. The 2017 Badger Golf Open, held June 9th at Hawk's View Golf Club in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, was a great success!

The winning foursome was Matt Jenson, Dan Price, Max Kaminsky, & Nick Weisnicht with a score of 61. Second Place went to the foursome of Mike Baker, Brett Berlin, Laura Cathlina, & Michael Slovitt with a score of 62.

Thanks to sponsors CBRE Capital Markets and Tishman Speyer, as well as Hawks View Golf Club, who donated several items in kind. Denver Badgers Tour WeWorks

On May 11, the Denver chapter of WREAA toured The Lab, an office project anchored by WeWork.  The tour provided most attendees their first opportunity to see the WeWork model in action.  Following the tour, the group enjoyed a happy hour at the Denver Beer Co.  A big thanks to Katie Bergen, a Badger with Centersquare Investment Management (building’s owner), for leading the tour.



Northern California Badger Golf Outing

The Bay Area chapter of WREAA played the Golf Club at Moffett Field on June 27.  The site is situated on land that Google leases from NASA and is adjacent to Larry Page’s personal airstrip.  It was a great day on the links despite strong gusts of wind off the San Francisco Bay that made for some interesting golf shots.  Brandon Buza scored an easy victory in the Best Dressed category while reigning champ Frank Stumpf squeaked out the tournament low score by defeating Dan Flattery in a tiebreaker (The tiebreaker went to the lender with the best spread on the most recent Bay Area real estate financing). Thanks to all who came out!

San Francisco Chapter Discusses Capital Markets

Members of the San Francisco WREAA chapter gathered on March 16th, for a capital markets discussion and tour of Market Montgomery Tower, a trophy office tower that is actively being marketed for sale.  The event was followed by a happy hour and viewing party for the Wisconsin Badgers opening round game of the NCAA tournament.  Special thanks to Eastdil Secured for leading the tour and providing space for the the happy hour and to STRS OH, owners of the Market Montgomery Tower.  


WREAA Northeast Tours JGB Central Tower




Alumni and guests toured JBG's Central Place Residential Tower, a Monday Properties office building in Arlington, VA on April 21st.  Central Place is a 31-story, 1 million-square-foot mixed-use development which includes a companion class-A office building. The residential tower, a JBG joint venture with the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio, offers 377 apartments. The development boasts a 17,000-square-foot public plaza and an observation deck offering unobstructed views of the National Mall.


Following the tour, the group met for a networking reception at Heavy Seas Alehouse.  Kudos to WREAA Market Representatives for the Northeastern Region - Washington D.C, Sean McDonald (MBA 2008) and Marshall Scallan (MBA 2007) for coordinating the event!


New York Badgers Tour One WTC



The April 19th tour of the World Trade Center Site and Observatory, given by New York Times bestselling author and official biographer of One WTC, Judith Dupré, was extremely well attended. WREAA members and guests enjoyed unparalleled access to the WTC site and project stakeholders. The tour concluded with networking at One World Observatory. Many thanks to tour guide Judith Dupré and to coordinator, Northeastern Region Market Representative, Matthew Rawlsky (BBA 2009)!

Illinois Region's Holiday Party Held at Federales

Nearly 90 Illinois alumni and friends gathered in the Graffiti Bar at Federales in Chicago for the region’s Annual Holiday Party.   Badgers connected over tequila and tacos and celebrated the holiday season.  Many thanks to WREAA Market Rep. Katie Whitty (BBA 2003), who did a super job coordinating the event! 



Minnesota Region Holds Crystal Ball Panel and Holiday Party




The Minnesota Region gathered December 15 at The Minikahda Club in Minneapolis, for a Holiday Happy Hour and to hear from a “Crystal Ball Panel”.  The panel of experts, comprised of WREAA Members Brent Rogers (BBA 2000) of Saturday Properties, Judy Jandro (BBA 2001) of Bell State Bank, Nino Pedrelli (Ph.D. 1998) with State Street Realty and Devin Duffy (BBA 2006) of Castlelake, discussed their best and worst deals and looked into their crystal balls to predict what lies ahead over the next 12 months. Thanks to event coordinator, Anders Pesavento, BBA 2005, Market Representative for the Minnesota Region for a fantastic Christmas event.



Colorado Badgers Tour Stanley Marketplace




Denver area WREAA members and guests were treated to a project tour of Stanley Marketplace in December. Flightline Ventures redeveloped the former Stanley Aviation building in Aurora, Colorado to create Stanley Marketplace. The project features space for over 50 independently owned Colorado businesses under one roof.  Mark Shaker, of Flightline Ventures, led the group on the tour.  Mark, a UW alum with a degree in social work, is one of three partners in the project. The tour ended at the newly opened Cheluna Brewing Company, inside of Stanley Marketplace, where attendees enjoyed a holiday party.  The successful event was arranged by Chad Messer (MBA 2015), Market Representative for Denver. 


Dallas Alumni Get Behind the Scenes at Granite Park




Alumni and guests from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area toured the Granite Park Five office development in early December. A representative from Granite Properties guided the tour.  The Granite Park office development will have 3.5 million square feet of office and retail space when complete.  Located adjacent to the Legacy business park at the corner of the Dallas North Tollway and the Sam Rayburn Tollway (SH 121), the class-A office development also offers a variety of restaurants as well as the Hilton Plano Granite Park.  A networking reception at Henry’s Tavern followed the tour.  Northern California Hosts Holiday Get Together  

Northern California alumni and guests gathered at the Golden Gate Tap Room in San Francisco last week.  The group did some holiday networking and cheered the Badgers to a 77-60 victory in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge! Thanks to Regional Director Dan Flattery, BBA 2008, for coordinating the event!



 Minnesota Region Tours Hines T3 Office Development



The Minnesota Region’s recent tour of the Hines T3 Office Development in Minneapolis was very well attended! The group was joined by Sam Maguire, Ann Rinde and Brent Robertson from the downtown JLL Team. Following the tour, everyone gathered at The Loop for a networking happy hour. Thanks to WREAA Market Representative Anders Pesavento (BBA 2005) for coordinating the event!



Southern California Alums Gather to Cheer Badgers 



Southern California alumni and friends gathered at the PB Shore Club to watch the Badgers take on the Ohio State Buckeyes.  Thanks to WREAA Market Representative Scot Eisendrath (BBA 1993) for his work in coordinating the event!


Colorado Badgers Scale Mountain   


Three UW Alums moved to Denver, CO over the summer and met to take on a mountain. Real Estate Badgers Zi Chong MBA'16, Mike Ullman MBA'16, Kirsten Voss BBA'15 conquered their first Fourteener (with the help of Spotted Cow) - Grays Peak 14,278 ft of elevation. On Wisconsin!

Eastern Wisconsin Tours Drexel Town Square

On July 21st members of the SE Wisconsin region braved hot afternoon temperatures to tour Drexel Town Square in Oak Creek, WI. Nate Franke, development and leasing director with project consultant Zilber Property Group, started the tour with an intro and Q&A session in the air-conditioned chambers of the Oak Creek Council before taking the group on a walking tour around the square. Drexel Town Square is a mixed use project being developed by the City of Oak Creek in partnership with master developer Wispark, LLC, the real estate development subsidiary of Wisconsin Energy Corporation. The project includes retail, office, hotel, and restaurant space; luxury apartments; a wetland park complete with walking trails; a central plaza and courtyard; Oak Creek City Hall and Public Library; and public amenities, including an ice skating rink, farmer's market area, dog park, and bike and walking paths. Among the businesses that currently, or soon will, call Drexel Town Square home are Meijer, Froedtert Health, Marriott TownePlace Suites, Water Street Brewery, Chick-fil-A, Chocolate Factory, Pizza Man, BelAir Cantina, and Valentine Coffee Roasters.


Before it was Drexel Town Square, the site was a manufacturing and technology development center, built in 1957 by Delco Electronics, formerly Oak Creek's largest employer. Through the years and a number of corporate changes, it became AC Spark Plug, the AC Electronics Division of General Motors and, finally, Delphi Electronics & Safety. Part of the plant was demolished to make room for a Woodman's grocery store in 2007. The rest was  closed and demolished in 2008, and the site remained dormant until 2011 when it was acquired by Wispark."


Seattle Area Badgers Tour in Bellevue



WREAA members in the Northwest Region were treated to a project tour of the Bellevue Collection's major mixed-use expansion on September 22.  Jim Melby, President of Kemper Development Company, gave a thoughtful overview of the massive project expansion, with hotel, multifamily, retail and parking components.  The group toured mock-ups of the hotel rooms and typical apartment units.  Following the tour, everyone met at Tavern Hall for a frosty and networking. Thanks to WREAA Pacific Northwest Regional Director, James Geimer (MS 1989), for organizing the event! 


NYC Hosts Lunch and Learn



New York City alumni and guests enjoyed a Lunch and Learn event on September 22. Stephen Winter, Vice President and Related's Head of Leasing for Hudson Yard, was the keynote speaker for the event. Stephen discussed Hudson Yards and New York's office market. Kudos to WREAA’s New York City Market Representative, Matthew Rawlsky (BBA 2009) for coordinating the event.

Badger Golf Open Draws A Crowd

On June 17th, amidst bright sun and temperatures hovering in the low 70’s, over 65 Badgers and Guests gathered at Hawks View Golf Club in Lake Geneva, WI for the annual Badger Open Golf Event. The event was filled with fun, networking, and comradery as golfers of all abilities from across the country competed in a scramble format to take home this year’s title. The scramble was won by the foursome led by WREAA member Mitch Adams (BBA ’03) along with guests Pete Marino, Kevin Brennan and Darryl Rayfield, who together combined to defend last year’s crown and shoot a nine under par 63. Following golf was cocktails and a well-attended cookout dinner, where awards were distributed to top golfers and contest winners, as well as a special thank you presented to event sponsors CBRE, Waterton, Tishman Speyer, E&Y, Bank of America, and Guggenheim.


Kenect Chicago Connects WREAA Members

On June 27th, the WREAA Illinois Region held an event to kick off the summer. The event was centered around the newly constructed, transit-oriented, multifamily development Kenect Chicago, located in Chicago’s River West neighborhood. Nearly 40 members and guests gathered at the project site to listen to the Founder and CEO of Akara Partners,  Rajen Shastri, discuss the development process and lead a tour of the property. Mr. Shastri, a Badger Alumni, spoke about how the building’s amenities were designed to bring residents together and that the new retail tenants will help shape the growing River West neighborhood. Following the tour, the group gathered at The Dawson for networking, food, and drinks. The event provided a great way to visit a fellow Badger’s new development as well as catch up with classmates and friends.


Minnesota Region Meets for Co-Working Tour


Over twenty alumni and friends from the Minnesota Region met on June 27 to tour 1010 Lake and CoCo Uptown.  Following a casual discussion on co-working and its impact on the real estate market for office space, the group enjoyed networking, drinks and pizza. A special thanks to Tim Prinsen of Colliers for sharing this unique space, and to Minnesota Market Representative, Anders Pesavanto, (BBA 2005) for organizing the event.

WREAA Co-Sponsors Graaskamp on the Road Roundtable Luncheon


The June 24th installment of The Graaskamp on the Road Roundtable series brought a large group together at One Market Restaurant in San Francisco for a luncheon discussion.  Co-Sponsored by WREAA and the Graaskamp Center for Real Estate, the Roundtable featured Jeffrey Weber, Senior Managing Director, at Eastdil Secured, who shared his insights and experience on how real estate entrepreneurs, investors and financiers can identify and manage opportunity and risk in the evolving economy.  Along with his presentation, Jeffrey also led the group in a comprehensive discussion of risk and resiliency in financial and real estate markets and fielded questions from attendees.  Thanks to Jim Curtis (MS 1976) and Graaskamp Center staff for organizing the informative luncheon.

San Francisco Chapter Discusses Development Trends

More than 30 Wisconsin Real Estate Alumni got together in San Francisco for a discussion of Bay Area development trends.  The event was hosted by Columbia Property Trust at its newly renovated amenity space at 650 California Street, a 33-story Class A office tower CPT recently acquired in the Financial District.  The event featured Gino Canori, Executive VP at Related Company and Dan Safier, President of Prado Group who shared their expertise and experiences
