Message from the WREAA President

Dear Alumni and Friends,

On behalf of the WREAA Board of Directors and staff, I’m very pleased to share this update on a number of important initiatives.

Faculty Addition:  Mark Eppli Returns to UW Madison

Earlier this fall, the WREAA Board began discussions with the UW Graaskamp Center for Real Estate to create and build support for a new real estate faculty position that would bring Badger real estate alumnus Mark Eppli (PhD ‘91, MS ‘84, and BBA ‘83) back to the UW Madison Real Estate Program.  As a result of the collaborative efforts and financial support of the Graaskamp Center, the WREAA, and the Wisconsin Realtors Association, Mark was offered and accepted a new faculty position at the UW that will become effective in August of 2018.  The newly created position will expand the Graaskamp Center’s role in applied commercial real estate research and its dissemination to industry groups, government organizations, academia, and among students.

For those of you who don’t know Mark, he is an experienced and highly regarded professor and administrator, who is currently acting Professor of Finance and Bell Chair in Real Estate at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  You can read more about Mark’s background and the announcement of this position at the WREAA Website.   When asked about his new role, Mark said, "I am thrilled to return home to my alma mater and the real estate program that provided me with the education that launched my professional and academic career in real estate.  This appointment is deeply meaningful to me as a first generation college student returning to my alma mater to teach, research, and serve at one the leading educational programs in our industry.”  Please join the WREAA Board in congratulating Mark on his new position. We look forward to Mark joining our esteemed faculty team at the UW, where his leadership, expertise and industry connections are certain to strengthen our already outstanding program.

Graaskamp Center Welcomes New Academic Director

Professor Andra Ghent has been appointed the new Academic Director of the Graaskamp Center for Real Estate.  She replaces Professor Tim Riddiough who will continue as a member of the Real Estate Program’s faculty team. Andra brings to the Center a unique mix of innovative research, practical experience, teaching expertise and dedication to the industry.  Her research interests include the study of mortgages, mortgage laws and the MBS market.  We look forward to Andra’s leadership in this new capacity.

Wisconsin Graduate Program

Wisconsin School of Business Dean Anne Massey announced that the full-time MBA Program at Wisconsin is again on solid ground.  This announcement followed the release of news earlier that the school was exploring the future of the full-time MBA.  According to Dean Massey, the WSB remains committed to delivering an applied experience that provides students expertise in general management concepts as well as deep knowledge within a specific field.  In addition to offering the full-time MBA program, the school is currently exploring the possibility of resuming the MS program as part of the real estate program.

Thank you, Thank you!

On behalf of our Board of Directors, I’d like to thank our outgoing Board Members who each played a vital role in their local regions:  Matt Braun, James Geimer, Alan Carmichael, and Max Peek.  Welcome to the following new Regional Directors who have each accepted a 2 year term on the WREAA Board:  Lee Christensen (Western Wisconsin), Will Dyer (Southeast), Dan Lessor (Pacific Northwest), Brandon Winter (Southern California), and Scott Miller (Illinois.)  In addition, we thank our 2018 Corporate Partners for their tremendous support:  Eastdil Secured, HFF, First American Title and Jones Lang LaSalle.  We also extend our gratitude to our 2017 Trends Conference Sponsors.  Finally, we thank each of our members for their involvement and support of the WREAA.  If you haven’t already renewed your membership for 2018, please do so soon, as we absolutely rely on your support to build our alumni network on a regional level and to provide needed financial backing to the UW Real Estate Program.

Exciting Times Ahead in 2018

As the year winds down, we look ahead to 2018 as an exciting time of opportunity for the Wisconsin Real Estate Program and the WREAA.  In addition to welcoming Mark Eppli back to Wisconsin, we will host the 2018 Biennial Reunion on campus, returning to the Edgewater’s Lakeside Plaza and the renovated Memorial Union.  Mark your calendars now to attend what is sure to be a celebratory event September 13-15!   Also, watch your email for the many regional events that will be planned throughout the country in 2018!

Best wishes for a Happy Holiday Season and prosperous New Year.  On Wisconsin!
