Eastern Wisconsin Tours Drexel Town Square
by James Roemer (BBA 1987)

On July 21st members of the SE Wisconsin region braved hot afternoon temperatures to tour Drexel Town Square in Oak Creek, WI. Nate Franke, development and leasing director with project consultant Zilber Property Group, started the tour with an intro and Q&A session in the air-conditioned chambers of the Oak Creek Council before taking the group on a walking tour around the square. Drexel Town Square is a mixed use project being developed by the City of Oak Creek in partnership with master developer Wispark, LLC, the real estate development subsidiary of Wisconsin Energy Corporation. The project includes retail, office, hotel, and restaurant space; luxury apartments; a wetland park complete with walking trails; a central plaza and courtyard; Oak Creek City Hall and Public Library; and public amenities, including an ice skating rink, farmer's market area, dog park, and bike and walking paths. Among the businesses that currently, or soon will, call Drexel Town Square home are Meijer, Froedtert Health, Marriott TownePlace Suites, Water Street Brewery, Chick-fil-A, Chocolate Factory, Pizza Man, BelAir Cantina, and Valentine Coffee Roasters.

Before it was Drexel Town Square, the site was a manufacturing and technology development center, built in 1957 by Delco Electronics, formerly Oak Creek's largest employer. Through the years and a number of corporate changes, it became AC Spark Plug, the AC Electronics Division of General Motors and, finally, Delphi Electronics & Safety. Part of the plant was demolished to make room for a Woodman's grocery store in 2007. The rest was  closed and demolished in 2008, and the site remained dormant until 2011 when it was acquired by Wispark."
